In an emotional and candid press conference today, University of Colorado head coach Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders revealed that he had been quietly battling an aggressive, high-grade bladder cancer diagnosis earlier this year.

Standing beside his medical team, Sanders shared the difficult journey he’s endured, from diagnosis to surgery and recovery. The cancer was found during scans earlier in the year, and given its severity and the high risk of recurrence, doctors recommended a full bladder removal. Sanders made the tough decision to go forward with the procedure. His medical team now considers him cancer-free.

A Private Battle Brought to Light

For months, speculation surrounded Sanders’ health as he remained off the field and away from the public eye. Rumors swirled, but today he laid everything out with transparency and vulnerability. He spoke openly about the emotional toll of preparing a will, uncertain if he would live to coach another season.

“I had to think about not being here,” he said. “That’s not something you ever really get used to. But I never asked, ‘Why me?’ I just asked, ‘What now?’”

Surgery and Recovery

Following the diagnosis, Sanders underwent a radical cystectomy, a procedure in which his bladder was completely removed. A new bladder was reconstructed through robotic surgery using part of his intestine. The recovery process has been physically and emotionally taxing. He lost 25 pounds and had to adjust to a new way of life that includes managing a catheter and learning how to function with the reconstructed organ.

With his characteristic humor, Sanders made light of the adjustments, mentioning that he now relies on adult briefs and portable toilets—especially important as he returns to the sidelines. Despite these changes, he emphasized that he’s grateful just to be alive and healthy.

Family, Faith, and Focus

Sanders spoke with deep gratitude for his family, particularly his son Deion Jr., who stayed by his side every day during treatment and recovery. He also leaned heavily on his faith, saying that his belief in God gave him peace and clarity through the darkest moments.

“I’m still here. I’m still Coach Prime. I’ve still got work to do,” he said. “I believe I went through this for a reason. I want to use my story to inspire, to educate, and to uplift.”

Return to the Field

Coach Prime made it clear that he’s returning to coach the Colorado Buffaloes this season. After back-to-back seasons that revitalized the program and captured national attention, he’s not ready to step back. Despite losing key players to the NFL, including his sons Shedeur and Shilo and standout Travis Hunter, Sanders remains focused on developing the next generation of athletes and leaders.

This fall, all eyes will be on Colorado as they open the season under the lights at Folsom Field. With a roster in transition, it’s an opportunity to witness not just a football team in evolution, but a coach who’s been through the fire and come out stronger.

A Message for Men’s Health

One of the most powerful parts of the press conference was Sanders’ message to other men—especially Black men—about the importance of early detection and regular health screenings. He encouraged everyone to listen to their bodies, go to the doctor, and prioritize their well-being.

“I was blessed because we caught it in time,” he said. “But a lot of men don’t go to the doctor until it’s too late. We’ve got to change that. We’ve got to take care of ourselves.”

Beyond Football

Deion Sanders has always been larger than life—a Hall of Famer, a cultural icon, and an inspirational figure. But today he showed a different kind of strength. He let the world see him at his most vulnerable, not to gain sympathy but to shine a light on survival, resilience, and purpose.

His story is not just about beating cancer. It’s about continuing to live with passion, humility, and commitment. It’s about refusing to give up, even when the odds are against you. And it’s about using your platform to uplift others—something Sanders has always done in his own unique way.

Coach Prime may have just scored the biggest win of his life—and now, he’s back on the field, ready for the next season of his journey.
