Tributes to Prince, Frankie Beverly & More Highlight Recording Academy’s 2025 Special Merit Awards

On Feb.1st, the Recording Academy honored a distinguished group of artists at the Special Merit Awards Ceremony, bestowing Lifetime Achievement Awards upon luminaries including Frankie Beverly, Prince, Roxanne Shanté and Dr. Bobby Jones. This event, set at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre, preceded the main GRAMMY Awards ceremony on February 2.
Frankie Beverly, the charismatic frontman of Maze, has been a cornerstone of soul and R&B since the 1970s. Known for timeless hits like “Before I Let Go” and “Joy and Pain,” Beverly’s smooth vocals and compelling stage presence have made him a beloved figure in music. Despite Maze’s significant impact, the group has not secured a GRAMMY win, making this Lifetime Achievement Award a poignant recognition of their enduring influence.

Prince, a prodigious talent, made indelible contributions to music throughout his career, garnering seven GRAMMY Awards and 33 nominations, reflecting his versatility across genres. His groundbreaking album Purple Rain earned him two GRAMMYs in 1985, including Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media. Prince graced the cover of EBONY magazine multiple times, notably in July 2010, where he discussed his creative process and the evolution of his music. The following day, during the main GRAMMY ceremony, Prince will receive an additional tribute, further cementing his legacy as a musical innovator.

Roxanne Shanté emerged in the mid-1980s as one of hip-hop’s first female rappers to gain widespread acclaim. Her sharp lyricism and fearless persona challenged the male-dominated rap scene, paving the way for future generations of female MCs. While she did not secure GRAMMY nominations during her peak, her influence on hip-hop culture is undeniable. In a recent interview with EBONY, Shanté reflected on her journey and the impact of her story on hip-hop’s 50th anniversary.

Dr. Bobby Jones has dedicated his life to the promotion and celebration of gospel music. As the host of Bobby Jones Gospel, the longest-running original program on BET, he provided a national platform for gospel artists for over 35 years. His efforts have been instrumental in bringing gospel music to mainstream audiences. Dr. Jones has received a GRAMMY Award for Best Soul Gospel Performance by a Duo or Group, further highlighting his impact on the genre. The Special Merit Awards Ceremony serves as a moment to reflect on and celebrate the enduring legacies of these artists, whose contributions have indelibly shaped the musical landscape.
