The “Friday” franchise has left an indelible mark on popular culture, introducing catchphrases and characters that remain influential.

Ice Cube, the multifaceted rapper, actor, and filmmaker, has officially signed a deal with Warner Bros.’ New Line Cinema to write and star in “Last Friday,” the fourth installment of the beloved “Friday” film series. This development marks the first addition to the franchise in over two decades, following the release of “Friday After Next” in 2002.
A Long-Awaited Return
The “Friday” series, which began in 1995, has garnered a cult following for its humorous and authentic portrayal of life in South Central Los Angeles. Fans have eagerly anticipated a continuation of the story, and this new agreement signals a significant step toward fulfilling that desire. Richard Brener, President and Chief Creative Officer of New Line Cinema, confirmed the collaboration, stating, “We are making another ‘Friday.’ We just closed a deal with Ice Cube to write and star. It’s going to be called ‘Last Friday.’”

Overcoming Development Hurdles
The journey to this point has been fraught with challenges. Ice Cube has been vocal about his efforts to produce a fourth “Friday” film, often citing obstacles within the studio system. In a 2024 interview on Flavor Flav’s SiriusXM show, “Flavor of the Week,” he expressed optimism about renewed interest from Warner Bros.’ new leadership. He noted that Mike De Luca, who was involved with the original “Friday,” had returned to the studio, potentially paving the way for “Last Friday.”
Tribute to Past Cast Members
The original “Friday” film featured a memorable ensemble cast, including Chris Tucker as Smokey, John Witherspoon as Mr. Jones, and Tommy “Tiny” Lister Jr. as Deebo. The passing of Witherspoon in 2019 and Lister in 2020 has left fans wondering how the new film will address their iconic characters. While specific plot details remain under wraps, it is anticipated that “Last Friday” will honor these actors’ contributions to the series.
